The Chairs of Concrete Canoe and of Steel Bridge also spoke at the meeting and discussed upcoming events. To wrap up the meeting, we held a competition to construct a tower out of wooden sticks and tape that would have to hold up a tennis ball.
Nov. 28, 2012 - End of Semester Banquet
The ASCE end of semester banquet was held on November 28, 2012 at Pluckers on Nicholson. Most of the old and new officers, and many others, attended, enjoying great food and socializing. Dr. Barbato, our new faculty advisor, thanked the officer council for all the great work they did, congratulated the new officers, and encouraged students to participate in steel bridge, concrete canoe, and surveying competitions at next semester's Deep South conference. (Southern University will be hosting the conference this spring. If you are interested please contact us at [email protected] to get involved! It doesn't have to be a huge time commitment.) Some, or perhaps all, of the old officers congratulated/thanked Dr. Barbato with a signed card for serving as the ASCE faculty advisor, and Ms. Janet Labatut with a signed card for serving as the administrator of our department. Both of them were also given gifts of appreciation. This is the last time ASCE will meet until next semester. Thank you to everyone who attended and have a great Winter break.

Oct. 25, 2012 - Dr. Rodolfo J. Aguilar from Pyburn & Odom MCA, LLC (Google Picasa Album)
The Oct. 25, 2012 ASCE at LSU meeting featured Dr. "Rudy" Aguilar, the Chairman and CEO of Pyburn & Odom MCA, LLC.
Dr. Aguilar spoke about life lessons that he has learned, encouraging us students to be independent thinkers and workers. He has worked as a professor, architect, engineer, banker, entrepreneur, and more. His achievements would be impressive for anyone, especially considering that Dr. Aguilar is actually from Latin America (Costa Rica). But one of the things he shared with us is that what you view as an obstacle may actually be a strength; in his case, his foreign accent made it difficult for him to be eloquent (or a lawyer), but it also forced people to listen more closely to what he was saying, and it made him different.
So, "thank you" to everyone who came to the meeting, but most of all to Dr. Aguilar for sponsoring our meeting and providing us with good advice for our careers.

Oct. 11, 2012 - Bill Rushing from Waldemar S. Nelson, Inc. (Google Picasa Album)
At our October 11, 2012 meeting, it was an honor for our chapter to hear from a very successful civil engineer - a Vice President and future President of ACI. Mr. Bill Rushing is a big LSU fan (on one of these photos there is a slide with a photo of the Tiger statue that he keeps in his den) and generously offered to help us as he was able. Encouraging, awe-inspiring, and funny, Mr. Rushing's presentation included some advice for us students (e.g., Enjoy your college years...but don't forget to study), profiles of amazing projects that Waldemar S. Nelson has undertaken (e.g., a world record underground utility project at Orange Beach, Alabama and The Case of the Rising Slab), and answers to our questions. THANK YOU MR. RUSHING!
Sept. 27, 2012 - Justin Schexnayder from Providence Engineering (Google Picasa Album)
The third ASCE Meeting was on Thursday, September 27th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Germano Center (2412 Patrick F. Taylor Hall). Justin Schexnayder talked about the importance of a can-do attitude when approaching difficulties, gave advice about stuff like your GPA (keep it up, but it certainly isn't the only thing that matters) and being organized at work (document the reasons for your answers so you can respond when an engineer questions them), and told us about his career so far. Providence Engineering has a three-part motto: Take Care of the Client, Have Fun Doing It, and Make a Little Money. Justin, thank you for coming to speak to us!
Sept. 13, 2012 - Joey Coco from Engensus Engineering (Google Album)
The second ASCE Meeting was on Thursday, September 13th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Germano Center (2412 Patrick F. Taylor Hall). Joey Coco from Engensus Engineering spoke about the 2012 Report Card for Louisiana's Infrastructure. He also emphasized that in government and private practice, our work will be broader than a single sub-discipline (geotechnical, structural, etc.). Thanks Joey!
